Hi, how are you?
My name is Diana.
I’m an emerging illustrator and picture book author born and raised in Los Angeles, California but residing in Japan. Throughout elementary school, I was usually the last to clean up my desk after art class and often covered my notebooks with doodles. I studied fine art in university where I became reacquainted with picture books. I found myself captivated by the depth, beauty, and humor captured by only 32 pages. While studying and working in Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan, I learned more about illustration and commenced my journey as an illustrator.
Drawn to narrative illustrations, I hope to convey my visual voice through children’s books (picture books, board books, and middle grade) and editorial pieces. I would also love to get involved in any project that resonates with my creative passions and goals. As the daughter of Jamaican and Filipino immigrants, I especially hope to give voice to the stories of people who feel in between. I have also immersed myself in many diverse communities while living and traveling abroad. So, I aim to share my experiences of different cultures and languages through my art.
I illustrate with traditional materials, including colored pencil, watercolor, gouache, graphite, ink, and collage, with minimal digital editing. I find inspiration in everyday objects, beautifully decorated desserts, fairy tales, various shades of red and green, and the magic within ordinary people and things.
When I’m not making art, you can find me reading or immersed in a film. I enjoy films that create stunning visual and emotional landscapes. And many of my favorite films contemplate our social existence and relationships (I am especially fond of meditations on grief). I also love traveling near and far to learn about the lives of people in different places, visiting kissaten (Japanese-style tearooms/ coffee shops), and trying new local restaurants.
I am currently seeking representation, and I am happy to take on commissions! Please refer to the FAQ for more details.
